The Crane
Destination: Barbados CaribbeanHotel Rating: 4 Stars
What to expect: The Caribbean's oldest continuously operating hotel, The Crane has been enlarged but maintains a tropical-colonial ambience exemplified by the lobby's creamy coral-stone walls, orchids, and overstuffed seating covered in white fabric. Gardens, lawns, bronze sculptures, tradewinds, and panoramic views create a tranquility that attracts couples, honeymooners, and families with older children.
Amenity highlights: Below the cliff on which the hotel sits, a 250-yard beach of pinkish coral sand offers umbrellas and cushioned lounge chairs for sunbathing and snoozing. An offshore reef tames Atlantic Ocean swells, ensuring calm-water swimming. Wading depth runs 75 yards out from the sloping beach. Atop the cliff is an 85-by-40-foot pool fronted by Roman-style columns and surrounded by a marble deck furnished with umbrellas and thickly cushioned lounge chairs.
Insider tip: Extensive 18th-century plantation ruins lie atop a bluff adjacent to the hotel. Benches near the ruins provide panoramic views of the ocean.
