FANTASTIC!!!

This vacation was fantastic! I purchased this trip through Apple Vacations in November for my mother and me.
Apple's flight was all-inclusive, meaning everyone was going to Dominican Republic. The flight was pleasant but lacked legroom. The ride from Punta Cana to CDM was an hour and a half but the ride wasn't bad as there were many sites to see. The ride had many photo opportunities of local life and history, and the Apple representative was very willing to answer any questions we had. (The ride back to Punta Cana at the end of the trip did get long, as the air didn't work and the woman sitting in front of me was rude and would not let me open the window, and I was car sick. But the Apple Representative was still very kind and accommodating.)
We arrived at CDM around 12:30pm. At check in a woman with yummy drinks greeted us for all incoming guests. Actual check in was not until 3pm so we went to the Buffet, which was great. The variety was plentiful. Neither my mother, nor I got sick and we ate everything from meats, to fresh juicy fruits, to specialty pastas, to Dominican dishes, to homemade pastries, to crispy veggies and soups. Even a picky eater or vegan would have a lot to eat. More about the food in a moment. After we ate, we checked in with the fantastically friendly reception staff. (Thank you Juliana y Marilyn). We did have to wait a bit for out luggage, but Reynaldo, our bellman, was most friendly and very sociable. By the way, everywhere you turned you received a smile, "hola", and "como estas?" from the staff. They all really made the trip over the top in quality. They all work many long hours, but you will never find a frown or hear a complaint from them.
I had requested building two and got it no questions asked. On day 2, we asked to change rooms, as the ceiling in the bathroom was leaking. Again, no questions asked they moved us with no problem. They had tried to fix it four different times, but I think because of the rain the prior week they were unable to do much. The rooms were nice, and well kept, clean with a beautiful view. The view was beautiful in the first room, backwards in the second, but still beautiful you just couldn't see it from the bed. Maid service was mediocre. We received washcloths only two days, and were never given enough towels, however in speaking with other guest this was never a problem. We did leave, however, two dollars for the first 4 days and a box of Jellybelly's at the end. The maids were always friendly, and we assumed this lack of service was simply a fluke. This is the worst thing I can say about CDM, as everything really was paradise. Also, another great thing about the Apple package was the safe in the room was included for free. It gives you extra security and piece of mind. (we did forget to close our safe one day and there were no problems) Another compliment to the staff comes for when we lost an earring in the move from room to room. Management came to our room and checked in periodically to see if we had found it or to let us know they had not yet found it. Unfortunately, we did not find it, but the friendliness and professionalism of the staff made the situation less of a trauma. We had also left some things by accident in the other room without noticing, and the maid later brought them to our other room greeting us with the trademark smile and friendliness.
I was interested to see in a prior review that the people felt trapped when there were security gates at the entrance of CDM and that they felt unsafe leaving the resort. I appreciated the gates, because they made sure no one was entering that shouldn't be. As for leaving CDM, going to Bayahibe along the beach, my mother and I went alone NEVER fearing for our safety. In the little fishing village, we were also greeted with smiles and holas. *Side note: if you are stuck up and unfriendly, don't expect different from others. We greeted everyone in the village with smiles and holas and they were happy to say it back and even strike up conversation if you would let them. Granted, my Spanish isn't great but they have fun and appreciate listening to tourists try. :) Venders are not pushy, and are also overall friendly. We haggled and felt very pleased with the price and quality of our purchases.
Entertainment: What can I say, but WOW!!! You have to see it to believe it! The work and time these people and the Animation Team go through to put on a remarkable, upbeat and energetic performance is just...WOW!!! They have mini discos and icebreakers at 9pm for the kids, who have a blast and are very fun to watch. At 9:45pm is the main event, and I would have thought I was in Vegas or paying a couple hundred dollars to see only them. This entertainment group was fantastic. The Animation team really makes the vacation memorable. Their enthusiasm is unforgettable. Thank you Chocolate, Luis M., Jhonny, Ezekiel, David, Pablo, and the others who are no less important, but I can’t think of all the names right now. They will let you be if you want to just sit back, but will sweep you off your feet with Merengue lessons and keep you in shape with aerobics, and sports, and so much more. There is A LOT to do!
CDM has to big parties, the pool party and beach party. Once again, WOW! The pool party and beach party are where they set up the buffet on the pool or beach and put up tables and such for your enjoyment, then provide entertainment to go with. The beach party happened to be our last night and it was a blast and perfect ending. Lots of dancing, games, laughs, and fun.
My mother and I were the more upbeat type and never got bored but you can very well lie back in the sun at the pool or on the beach and read a book with no one to bother you. By the way, I am 21 and my mother is just 56 years young and it was well suited for both of us.
We got a massage on the beach one day for the basic price of what you would pay in the States, and a chocolate mask and massage with hydrotherapy another day. The spa is gorgeous, so don't forget your camera!
Food: Great!!! Food was always above average if not better and always a lot of variety. We ate at all the restaurants, eating whatever we pleased and never got sick. Asia Restaurant (Japanese food), Da Mario’s (Italian yummy lasagna), Saona Grill (tender ribs), Bayahibe Buffet (thanks Julio the chef, Reynaldo,y Domingo!), and Jungle Bar ($) are all worth trying. No regrets. In order to like the food however, you need to be open minded and accepting you are eating what is part of their culture (this is the only reason I could see why people would be unhappy with the food). We met a picky vegan in CDM and even she was happy with the selection. We ate a Jungle Bar which is $30 US a person but well worth it. The lobster was great, and huge!!!
Went snorkeling on day 5, Que Bonita! I must have seen 300 different types of fish!
Overall, really great experience, and while I would like to see other places I would go back to Casa del Mar in a heartbeat. I am in Wisconsin now, but my heart is forever in the Dominican Republic. Don’t wait to go, it's well worth it. I know I wrote a lot, but missed much. If you have ANY questions or want to see pictures (I took 16 rolls!) , please feel free to email me.
One last thing, for those that complain about language problems, I met a lot of the staff who spoke 5 different languages. And those that don't know 5 know 4, you just have to be patient and enjoy your vacation!!!
