Location. Located directly on the beach of beautiful Simpson Bay, the Sunterra Flamingo Beach Resort overlooks the crystalline splendor of the Caribbean in St. Maarten, Netherlands Antilles. Divided between the Netherlands and France, the island is the smallest territory in the world shared by two sovereign states. The resort is less than 8 kilometers (5 miles) from both the Dutch and French capitols, Phillipsburg and Marigot respectively. Phillipsburg curves along the Great Bay and features plenty of duty-free shopping, casinos and restaurants. Marigot is reminiscent of a quaint French village and boasts some of the best cuisine in the Caribbean with somewhat of a quieter setting than Phillipsburg.

Hotel Features. The resort features an outdoor pool flanked by a sundeck with lounge chairs. Guests of the resort receive complimentary use of snorkeling equipment and there independent operators on the beach offering scuba diving, water skiing and sailing. The front desk staff is on hand 24-hours and will assist with tours, dry cleaning and business services. Guests enjoy complimentary access to a nearby fitness center and for a fee can take advantage of the seaside massage and beauty cabana. Barbeque grills are located on site and there are coin-operated laundry machines.

Guestrooms. Each of the studio and one-bedroom accommodations feature furnished balconies and kitchens with ranges, refrigerators and microwave ovens. Other amenities include in-room safes, cable television with premium channels and DVD/VCR upon request.

Expert Tip. The Loterie Farm, 12.5 kilometers (8 miles) from the resort, features the FlyZone. Visitors wear harnesses attached to steel cables to glide through the forest canopy and negotiate obstacles.

My husband and I spent 5 nights here in mid October, 2007. We were put in one of three building that are on the hill overlooking the resort that is in the picture. The resort is currently remodeling and we got a 2 bedroom that was in pretty dated condition. Although traveling off season is a great time for St. Maarten because there a far less tourists, so traffic and service are much better, the hotel was short staffed and we were not given a welcome packet about the activities that were occuring at the resort during our stay until our 4th day there. Internet service is available in the lobby using two computers, with incredibly slow dial up connections (taking almost 10 minutes to load and retrieve email)! By the way, when you use the time that you have pre-purchased, the computer shuts off, without notice and you have to rebuy and start the process all over again, which can be very expensive.
Location is good, but a rental car is necessary. The beach was nice and the staff good except for the activity desk and front desk that couldn't get it together. Try to get a remodeled room. The Studio is huge and sleeps 4 comfortably. Their are charcoal grills on the beach, and Gas grills on the top of the hillside buildings that the third floor rooms have access to.
