Hawaii Destination Information

Larger than all the other islands combined, "The Big Island" is a miniature continent with stunning beaches, dramatic cliffs, volcanic parks, exotic rivers, vast plains and even cactus studded deserts. The island is dominated by the twin peaks of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, both over 13,000 feet high and divided by ski slopes. Actually, Mauna Kea is only the top of a submerged mountain. Hawaii's only Polynesian-style resort

Located on the site of an ancient fishing village, this Polynesian-style resort consists of 125 thatch-roof hales (cottages) spread among 82 oceanfront acres of black lava, light-colored sand, natural ponds, and lush tropical plantings.

Although there are a few duplex cottages, most contain a single, luxurious guest suite without telephone, clock, radio, or television. Suite prices include three meals per day for two adults.
A full range of complimentary activities, including glass-bottom boat tours, is available on a lovely tropical beach fronting a calm bay. Two pools with sundecks and three tennis courts offer other recreational options.

Note: For children ages 3 and older, a sliding daily fee applies, with the exception of the "romance months" of May and September, when the resort discourages parents from bringing children.

What to expect: No vehicles beyond the sand parking lot. No paved paths. No telephones, except in a phone center with Internet access. No air conditioning except in the phone center. No television. No radios. No CD players. No clocks. There's nothing to interfere with the natural rhythms and sounds of oceanside life regulated by sunrises and sunsets.
Kona Village is where celebrities come to relax and be treated like everyone else, which is to say warmly but not fawningly. Legions of guests return annually. Begun in 1965 when access was by private plane on the resort's landing strip, Kona Village has since tripled in size.

Amenity highlights: The resort naturally divides itself into two sidesólight-sand side (south) and lava-and-black-sand side (north). Each has its own hot tub and pool surrounded by a sundeck with padded lounge chairs and thatched sun shelters. The lava side also has a children's pool. Hammocks, wood benches, and lounge chairs are scattered throughout the resort, making it easy to find restful privacy. The sand side includes a long, deep, crescent beach on Kahuwai Bay, which usually is calm and perfect for swimming and snorkeling.
