The resort is actually about 90 minutes from Cancun and 45 minutes from Playa (with no other stops to other resorts). Plan for 90-120 minutes to and from the airport. On your way home your shuttle will be scheduled a minimum of 4 hours prior to your flight time so keep that in mind when booking your travel.
The resort was well-kept and clean with a good variety of restaurants and bars as long as you take advantage of the shuttles to the nearby, sister properties (Coba and Tullum).
The beaches were much better than I expected. Based on pictures I had seen, I thought they would be rocky and didn\'t plan on being able to hang out there, however, they had several nice lagoons which appeared to be created by barriers and plenty of white sand. One lagoon was more crowded and the other more quiet - sort of off t the side. There were also some rocky areas that make beautiful scenery/pictures. There is also plenty of pool area too - lots of opportunity to lay in the sun all day. Or if you prefer, there is also plenty of shade based on the huts that line the beach and pool areas.
Two areas that need improvement are: 1. Beds - the mattresses are extremely hard. We were with a group of 30 for a wedding and everyone agreed on this point. The resort must also be aware because there is a notation in the book in the rooms that a mattress topper is available upon request, however, I think they have already been requested in all rooms because everyone already had the topper and they were still rock hard.
2. Reservations for restaurants. In order to eat in any of the non-buffet dining areas, you have to make a reservation. Due to demand, reservations need to be made in advance - in our case, several days in advance. There were a couple nights we could not get a reservation except at 5:30 or 10:00. I am not sure if you can make reservations before you arrive but it\'s something to ask about if don\'t want to eat dinner in the buffet dining areas.
And now a note about the food. The food was fairly good for what they are trying to accomplish. But it\'s not going to be like home so you need to set your expectations accordingly. What they may lack in quality, they make up for in quantity. You may not be able to find your favorite thing or what you typically eat but you will be able to try lots of new things, if you are open to it.
We stayed in Akumal which seemed larger than Coba and Tullum. It seemed like the buffets in Coba and Tullum were a bit nicer and better stocked but that could also be because they weren\'t as crowded.
Since these resorts are so far South, some good off-resort excursions are Xel-Ha and the ruins/beach at Tullum. Shopping in Playa del Carmen and taking a ferry to explore Cozumel are options too but you should plan for the amount of drive time it takes to get to and from Playa. Excursions can either be arranged through your tour company (they all have desks at the resort) or you can save some money and do it yourself by taking a $3 shuttle from the Hacienda (which is a shopping/gathering area right off the main Highway at the entrance to all 3 resorts) and then paying the applicable entry fee. For example, Xel-Ha is $95 per person through the tour company but admission is only $75 at the door plus a $3 shuttle ride.
One thing we were not prepared for is the mosquitos. I think this may be a particularly bad year for them but you should definitely take repellent with you. The bugs come out in force as the sun goes down (which by the way happens about 4:30 this time of year - mid-November).
I would probably not return to this resort because it\'s too far South - I would stay closer to Playa del Carmen next time. But I would definitely recommend staying at a resort that has sister/nearby resorts (like 3-in-1) because of the flexibility and options.
